June 2009 - Paulette B
  • altFavorite Ride: Oh so hard to choose!. Any ride on my 2007 Street Glide, the best bike in the world! Whether it be riding alone, with a few friends, or with a large group of friends, they are all good. Probably the Billings National Rally in June 2006. Even though I was riding my 2002, 883 Sportster and had the holy crap beat out of me on ride, I didn’t know the difference of riding a good bike versus a great bike.. We joined over 40 Yakima HOG members to attend the rally in 4 different groups. Our venture started out in over 100º temperatures and took us over Lolo Pass, staying at Three Creeks Resort in A frame cabins with no air conditioning or screens on the windows or doors in 100+ degree heat, through Yellowstone National Park seeing wonderful sites, Up Bear Tooth Pass, on to Billings for a great time at the rally. We headed home via Glacier National Park over the Going to the Sun Road, spectacular scenery! The most fun was staying at Glacier Gateway Plazza in Cutbank, Mt at a motel that had just been taken over by an East Indian man and his family. Reservations had been made almost a year in advance and he had no idea that the entire motel had been reserved by BIKERS! He started acting rather nervous when the first group of about 12 bikers arrived. Then another group arrived. While checking in, someone noticed what a nice foyer area they had with lots of seating and tables and chairs and said, “HEY, THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO HAVE A PARTY! And so it began. The ice chest was brought in with the “”drinks” and everyone, all 40+ bikers gathered in the foyer and talked, laughed and had a great time. We asked where we could go to eat and of course on Sunday night in Cutbank everything was closed except for the Pizza Hut and they were just about to close. We ordered 15 large pizza’s whatever was there most popular to be delivered to the motel. The poor pizza delivery boy was pretty overwhelmed! By this time, the owner had decided we weren’t going to destroy this motel, and opened up his breakfast bar so we could serve our pizza with napkins! After leaving Cutbank one of our party had not put on enough clothes and got cold. We stopped in Browning, Mt for them to put more clothes on. We had been warned about the intoxicated Indians in this area. While stopped a beat up car with 5 very large Indians in it pulled up beside us, and the entire intoxicated bunch got out of their car. One was toothless and friendly. He visited wanting to know where we were from, where are had stayed, and where we were going. He knew the Yakima area, and thought it was very nice. He wanted to know if the Res wasn’t good enough for us because we had strayed in Cutbank. This started making us a little uneasy. Another 6’3” 250+ lb young Indian man heard we were going to Glacier and said, “There are bear up there!” He kept repeating this periodically, and was trying to get past us kinda pushing his way through out bikes, heading towards a bar across the street. When we were ready to leave, he pushed past us and stood in the middle of street and said, “There bear up there, and they like white meat!” Then he turned and ran into the tavern laughing all the way!. We mounted our bikes and left town in a hurry!

  • Worst Ride: May 23, 2003 Husband had just picked up his bike a 2002 Yakima Police Standard Electra Glide in Bend, Oregon and had riding about 250 miles getting it home. When we got back to Yakima, my husband said, you want to ride it: You need to. We went to the Junior High Parking lot and I rode there for a while. He left me there until I was ready to go home. Well…..I decided to take the long way home and on the windy South Wenas Road after a long day of driving back from Bend and a long time since riding my myself, I lost concentration and hit some gravel and started wobbling, then looked at the big rock in the ditch and what they say is true…….You go where you are looking! After spending 3 days in Yakima Valley Memorial, airlifted to Harborview and spending 8 days until I could get my shoulder operated on, and having to have surgery the next day to rearrange my new shoulder, I was released and on my way back home for a long recovery the following day. Yes, we are still happily married, and he still has his Electra Glide and we ride together as often as we can.

  • Humorous Ride: Definitely the Reno Street Vibrations Ride in 2007. We were riding with a group of 12 and after a long ride through all kinds of weather including snow; we were in heavy Reno traffic. We needed to stay close together so we didn’t get separated by cars. We were on a 3 or 4 lane freeway and I was riding behind Sandy. There was a gap in our line so I rode up beside Sandy and yelled at her to stay close. I know there was lot of stress in my voice because she zoomed ahead and every time I even got close to her she would zoom off ahead. It became comical because if I had to tell her something I couldn’t catch her!

  • Ride Motto: If you have to ask, you wouldn’t understand; Ride and free your spirit!

  • Advice: Ride you own ride; Take advantage of every refresher training you can, it pays to sharpen your skills.
